Established in 1996, Lancaster and Gibbings specialise in the manufacture of cast pewter giftware. The main part of the range comprises a collection of photo frames, both in standard and "mini" formats.
Hand made in the UK
All items are exclusively designed and made in our Devon workshop. Each item is individually cast, finished, and assembled by hand.
Pewter
As Pewter becomes more fashionable the word has become widely used to describe simply a colour of metal. All Lancaster and Gibbings pieces are cast in solid pewter. There is no plated surface to wear off, no artificial patina or paint effect used to create a false impression of ageing and quality. Genuine pewter does not tarnish like silver, but instead will develop, over a number of years, a subtle patina that with occasional cleaning will enhance the natural beauty of the metal. To summarise, pewter has a softer look than silver while also requiring considerably less looking after.
Care of Pewter
All items are cast in fine pewter and only a minimum of care is needed to maintain the finish. If cleaned regularly (every month or so) we would recommend treating a photo frame in the same manner as the glass. A subtle patina will develop over a number of years and this regular gentle cleaning will enhance the appearance.
In more extreme cases, or to restore a neglected piece, cleaning depends on the original finish which will be either bright polished or satin brushed. Marks can be removed from the brushed finish if gently rubbed with, initially a nylon washing up scourer, or as a last resort, fine steel wool. Great care must be taken to only follow the direction of the original grain. With polished pieces silver polish can be used but again with care. All our polished pieces are finished to a soft shine which silver polish will brighten. If in doubt address any enquiries via our contact area.
